Group G1 (Botus Fleming/Stoke Damerel/) Summerfield

It has so far provided impossible to find the origins of the Samuel who was the patriarch of this family group. His baptism, about 1761, is not recorded at St Stephen's Saltash or at Botus Fleming. The only nearby parishes not covered by the IGI indexes are Saltash (Cornwall), and East Stonehouse and Plymouth Charles (Devon). Even if he came from one of these, it is likely that his ancestry is either among the Summerfields of North Devon (Pilton, Ashford, Heanton Punchardon), or those of Somerset. If he is not from these, he could have come from Leicestershire, Derbyshire or Staffordshire, but these do not appear to be related to the Devon Somerwills.

• SAMUEL (Sommerfield): Born c.1761. Married JANE CROSSLEY, St Stephen's Saltash, Cornwall, 20 Aug 1809, both 'of this parish' Jane born St Stephen's, Cornwall, 1789-1792. Samuel, of Botis Fleming, buried Botus Fleming 14 Dec 1830, age 69. In 1841 census Jane is at Lower Morton Hamlet, age 45, farmer; in 1851 census she is at Moditonham Quay, Botus Fleming, head, widow, age 59, occupation illegible. In 1861 census at Morditonham, 70, farmer. (Also a grandson, Samuel Brooking, 13, scholar, born Bishopstake Hampshire.) In 1871 census living with son Samuel and Sarah, age 81. Jane, of Pineapple, buried Botus Fleming 31 Juk 1872, 83 years. Death regd St Germans Sep 1872, age 83
• AUSTIN: Baptised Botus Fleming 20 Nov 1814. With mother in 1841 census, age 25, and in 1851 census, age 32 (sic). Marriage to ANN HOSKIN regd St Germans Dec 1853. Together in 1861 census at 4 William St, Stoke Damerel: Austin age 44, publican; Ann 45, born Devonport. In 1871 census at Forder, St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall: Austin 54, gardener; Ann 53, born Devonport [Also a daughter, Sarah Lord, married, 19, laundress, born Devonport - can't find]. In 1881 census at Forder Village, St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall: Austin age 66, market gardener, Ann age 67, born Maker, Cornwall. Marriage to SARAH JANE SOMMERFIELD BROOKING regd Stoke Damerel Dec 1874. Sarah's birth regd Stoke Damerel Sep 1855. Together with Austin & Ann in 1881 census, Samuel age 26, gardener lab., Sarah age 25. In 1891 census at Forder, St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall: Samuel 36, markey gardener; Sarah Jane 35. In 1901 census still at Forder: Samuel Austin age 46, market gardener on own account, working at home; Sarah Jane, 45, market gardener's help. Still at Forder in 1911 (5 rooms): Samuel Austin 56, market gardner (sic), working on his own account at home' Sarah Jane 55, 'working in garden'; married 36 years, 5 children born, all still alive).
