Marriage registered Pancras. Mary born Camden Town, Middx; baptised 14 May 1837. In 1861 census at 13 Prebend St, St Pancras: John age 30, basket maker; Mary age 23. With them is Mary's brother, George W. Anson, age 15, painter, born Somerstown. In 1871 census at same address. Death of Mary Ann regd Pancras Jun 1871 age 34.
  
• THEOPHILUS JOHN: Born Camden Town, London; birth regd Pancras Mar 1863 (Somerwill). At home in 1871 census, age 7. At home in 1881 census (index), unmarried, age 17, printing office. Lived with EMILY CROSHAW nee BROOK, born Chelmsford 1854. In 1901 census (as John Somerville) at 43 Malling St, Lewes, Sussex, 38, married, basket maker born London Kentish Town, with Emily, age 47, born Chelmsford, In 1911 census at 116 Malling St, Lewes (5 rooms): Theophilus John (Somerville) 47, basket manufacturer, at home; Emily 53; married 28 years; 6 children born alive; 5 living; 1 dead. Emily born Chelmsford. According to Clive Spratt: 'Emily married firstly Frederick Croshaw and they had seven children, four boys and three girls.  In the 1891 Census (a) and (b) she is shown as head of the household with six children, (Emily Beatrice Croshaw had died in infancy,) with her were her nephew William Frederick Smith and Theophilus J. Somerville a boarder. The story from some of the family is that her husband Frederick Croshaw decided to go to South Africa and start a new life, taking his eldest sons with him, but when he wanted Emily to follow him she refused. Subsequently, Emily and Theophilus moved to Cliffe near Lewes in Sussex where T J Somerville set up a successful basketmaking business, and they had two girls'. He also identifies earlier children of Emily and Frederick Croshaw: Benjamin Henry 1878 St Pancras, Emily Beatrice 1880 St Pancras, and Frederick William 1881 Kentish Town. The 1891 census entry was at 30 Tovey Pl, St Pancras. In the 1901 census at Lewes all the children present are named Somerville and Theophilus John is simply John. In 1921 census (as Somerville, though curiously originally entered as Summerville then crossed out) at 116 Malling St, Lewes: Theophilus 58yrs 2mths; basket maker, on your own, at home: Emily 67yrs 6mths.     • EMILY EVELYN (Somerville): Born 13 Nov 1913; birth regd Swansea Dec 1913. Mother appears to have died in childbirth. In 1921 census with grandparents, age 7yrs 7mths. In 1939 Register as Evelyn E. at Putney Hospital, Wandsworth, maid servant. Marriage to Archibald Murray regd Croydon, Dec 1940

      Marriage (2) to ALICE JOHNSON regd Lewes Dec 1915. In 1921 census at 7 Whippingham Road, Brighton: Albert 34yrs 11mths; engineer wash houseman, steam laundry, E. Crane West End Laundry, 100 Colridge St, Hove; 3 children, aged under 1, 3 and 10; Alice 26yrs 10mths; born Northampton; home duties. In 1939 Register at same address: Albert basket maker; Alice born 24 Aug 1894, unpaid domestic duties. Albert died Eastbourne 1 Dec 1962

    • JASMINE: Born 1 Oct 1917; birth regd Boston Dec 1917. In 1921 census with parents, 3yrs 8mths. Newspaper report in Daily Herald 15 Nov 1935 that she went through a form of marriage with the already-married Gerald Marlow (30), motor driver, and was charged with assisting a bigamy. Both were bound over for two years. With parents in 1939 Register, single, home duties.

(Somerville), age 50, basket maker, is at 43 Weedington Road, St Pancras, London, living with wife AGNES , age 43, born Glasgow (sic) (Ages are wrong, and Agnes' birthplace, but this is the right identification as the four children are with them).
