SOMERVILLE, SOMMERVILLE, SOMERVAIL, SOMERVELL, SOMERWILL:-
Local, ‘de Somerville’.
Lower says, ‘The progenitor of the noble family was Walter de Somerville, lord of Wicknor, &c., in Staffordshire, and of Aston Somerville, in co. Gloucester, who came into England with William the Conqueror, and left two sons, who became ancestors respectively of the English and of the Scottish Somervilles. This name has been anglicised to Somerfield.’ Patr. Brit. p.323

THE OXFORD DICTIONARY OF FAMILY NAMES IN BRITAIN AND IRELAND, edited by Patrick Hanks, Richard Coates, Peter McClure, OUP (2016)

Amended for unpublished 2nd edn:

Frequencies: GB 1881: 11, GB 2011: 48; .
main GB location, 1881: Devon
main Irish location, 1847-64:
Variants: Summerwell, Somervill, Somerwill, Summerfield.

1 English, Locative name: from Somerwell in Thelbridge (Devon) and from Summerwell in Hartland (Devon). The place-names derive from Old English sumor ‘summer’ + wielle, wiella ‘well, spring, stream’, denoting a spring that never runs dry. Middle English wille and welle are alternate forms of ‘well’ in medieval Devon. The name has probably been altered sometimes to Somerville and Summerfield.
Early Bearers: Jacobus de Somerwille, 1275 in Hundred Rolls (Ashburton, Devon); Walter Somerwille, 1332 in Subsidy Rolls (Thelbridge, Devon); Thomas de Somerwille, William de Somerwill', 1332 in Subsidy Rolls (Stoke Saint Nectan in Hartland, Devon); Johannes Somerwill, 1428 in Feudal Aids (Thelbridge and Chapner, Devon); Richard, Philip, and John Somerwell, 1524 in Subsidy Rolls (Thelbridge, Devon); Alex Somerwyll, 1524 in Subsidy Rolls (South Molton, Devon); William Somerwell, 1524 in Subsidy Rolls (Goodleigh, Devon); John Sommerwill, 1642 in Protestation Returns (Devon); Robart Somerwill, 1562, William Somerwell, 1599 in IGI (Swimbridge, Devon); George Summerwill, 1661 in IGI (Plymouth, Devon); Robert Somerwill, yeoman of Swimbridge, 1685 in Devon Record Office; Josias Summerwell, 1686, John Somerville, 1701, Mary Somerfield, 1777 in IGI (Nettlecombe, Somerset); Edward Summerwill, 1729 in IGI (Swimbridge, Devon).
Other info: For the family history see http://www.summerwill.co.uk/history.php. The 1275 form might be an error for Somerhill, the name of a farm or hamlet in Ashburton; see Summerhill.

References: Place-Names of Devon, pp. 76, 397.

2 Norman, English, Irish, see Somerville (1). Aston Somerville (Gloucs) was held by the Somerville family from the 13th century. The Bristol merchant family name may alternatively belong at (1).
Early Bearers: William Somerwell, merchant of Bristol, 1361 in TNA; Wm. Somerwelle, burgess, 1370 in Somerset Archives (Bristol, Gloucs); Robertus Somurwile, 1381 in Poll Tax (Aston Somerville, Gloucs); John Somerwell, merchant, 1386 in TNA (Bristol, Gloucs).

References: Place-Names of Gloucs 2, p. 3.

BATTLE ABBEY ROLL

This roll at Battle Abbey claims to be a list of the names of Norman families who fought in the battle of Hastings. It is of somewhat dubious authenticity. It includes the name of Somervile.

FEUDAL AIDS 1284-1431 (West Country Studies Library)

On 25th March 1428 the Commons made a grant to the King of tonnage and poundage, and also laid a tax on parishes and towns throughout England, graduated in proportion to the sums at which their respective churches were taxed for ecclesiastical tithes (tenths). When the value of the church was under ten marks the parish was assessed at 6s 8d and so on in proportion. There was also a levy of 6s 8d on every knight's fee in England (except lands assessed at under a quarter of a knight's fee). This is a tax record, arranged by county and then by hundred.

Translation: John Thilbrige, Thomas Wodhouse and John Somerwill hold half a knight's fee in Thylbrigge and Chadmore, which they hold separated amongst themselves, and none of them holds the whole four parts, and which was previously held, from a long time ago, by Margery Dynelegh (correctly Bynelegh).

Each year on a particular day able-bodied men assembled so that the number of fighting men could be counted and the state of their weapons assessed.

Then are given ‘the names of all thabell menne within the said parish of ... mustered’. These are listed as archers, harquebusiers, pikemen and billmen.

‘...The late Lord Somerville purchased a farm in this parish, near the River Lyn, and made some additions to the house for his occasional residence; it is now the property of his son, the present Lord, but is about to be sold.’

p.467
‘The manor of Swimbridge belongs to the Duke of Bedford. Ernsborough gave name to a family who possessed that manor at an early period. They were succeeded by the Flavells, whose heiress brought it to Sir John Mules, a younger son of the Lord Mules, and it continued in his family for several generations. One of the co-heiresses of the last Sir John Mules brought it to Dabernon, and the heiress of Dabernon to Gifford (Westcote).

In 1773, it was the joint property of Mr Lewis Somerville and William Berry, Esq., of West Buckland. This estate has been for some time in the family of Hole, and is now the property of Henry Hole, Esq., of Ebberly.’
