THOMAS: Goods assessed at £5 for taxation in the 1581 Subsidy. Buried
Swimbridge 21 Feb 1597. See will, made in 1595, in which he leaves 20d to the poor of the parish, 40 marks to the daughters if they marry, £6 to son John and the rest to his wife Johan. Robert is not included: he was married by then; the others were not. 40 marks was about £26, the value of three horses or thirteen cows. These were dowries for the daughters, which would become their husbands' property. The total estate must have about £60 or more, which is considerably greater than £5 assessment of his goods in the 1581 subsidy.
