Group C16 (Swimbridge/Marwood)

GEORGE: Three Georges were born within 5 years of each other, namely

(1) son of William & Mary, Swimbridge 1689 (Group C1);
(2) son of George & Susan, Chittlehampton 1694 (Group C2);
(3) son of Robert & Thomsyn, Swimbridge 1694 (Group B1).

They married within six years of each other:

(1) GRACE ACCLAND, Landkey 1716 (Grace buried 1763);
(2) ELIZABETH BARNS, Landkey 1718;
(3) JOAN WILMOT, Filleigh 1722 (George buried Filleigh 1764).

Two Georges died in old age at Swimbridge, one buried 1775, the other in 1780. It is assumed that the eldest married first and that it was he who died in 1775, but one cannot be certain which of the other two married Elizabeth and which married Joan.

• GEORGE: Baptised Swimbridge, son of William, 29 Oct 1689. See Group C1. Married GRACE ACCLAND, Landkey 4 Oct 1716. Grace born High Bickington, daughter of Richard & Ann Accland, 29 Oct 1690 (CFI). Grace buried Swimbridge 5 Jun 1763. George buried Swimbridge 1 Oct 1775. Left a will.

• GRACE: Baptised Swimbridge 19 Feb 1716/7. Married John Reynolds, Landkey 14 Feb 1742
• JOHN: Baptised Swimbridge 27 Jan 1718/9.See Group D for possible marriages
• MARY: Baptised Swimbridge 26 Sep 1722; buried Swimbridge 18 Sep 1728
• THOMAS: Baptised Swimbridge 5 Nov 1725. Married (1) CHARITY VILE, Swimbridge 26 Jan 1755. Charity buried Swimbridge 27 Dec 1758 (2) CATHERINE: No marriage found in Devon, but there is a marriage at Withypool, Exmoor, Somerset, to CATHERINE STEERE, on 27 Mar 1759 or 1760 in Somerset Marriage Index (two discrepant entries), and no children are recorded subsequently at Withypool. Catherine buried Marwood 18 Aug 1791. In 1791 Thomas was churchwarden at Marwood. Farmer at Widden, Marwood. In Land Tax Assessments 1784,1800,1804 Thos pays £2/4/11 to Mr Chas. Cutcliffe for Widden, and from 1800 to 1804 to Elenor Symonds for Muddiford also. Buried Marwood 1 Aug 1804. Will proved 6 Aug 1804: left dwelling house, orchard and garden in Marwood plus £50 to daughter Jane; left messuage and tenement at Whidden to son Thomas for his lifetime, to pass later to grandson John, and all other estate to Thomas. • THOMAS: Baptised West Buckland 18 Apr 1761 ('son of Thomas & Catherine of Chittlehampton'). Married JANE WHITE, Fremington 1 Jul 1793 ('sojourners'). Farmer at Widden, Marwood, until 1832. In 1841 census he is at High St, Ilfracombe, with son John, age given as 65. Possibly buried Pilton 26 Apr 1850, but ages do not match up. Possible also that Jane is the one at Ilfracombe Inn, Pilton, in the 1841 census (age 60) and buried Pilton 29 Dec 1847, age 73, but again ages do not fit well.
• JOHN: Baptised Fremington 2 Mar 1794. Married MARY NUTT 1817. See Group C18
• SARAH BUCKINGHAM: Baptised Fremington 8 Oct 1796. Married (as Sally) William Gabriel, Barnstaple 29 Sep 1825. William was the senior beadle at Barnstaple, turnkey of the local gaol and also a plumber and brazier. Had six children. • MARIA: Baptised Marwood 26 Dec 1800; married at Marwood 9 Nov 1820: 'Peter Luard of St Peter le Poer, London & Maria Summerwill of Bishop's Tawton' (father, Thomas, witnessed)
• JENNY: Baptised Marwood 27 Dec 1802. Probably the Jane Somerwill who married William Davey at Barnstaple S t Peter's 22 Jun 1828
• CATHERINE: Baptised Marwood 21 Mar 1805; married William Copp, Marwood 14 Jul 1832
• THOMAS: Baptised Marwood 25 Feb 1807; married ELIZABETH HOLMES. See Group C22
• BETTY: Baptised Marwood 8 Feb 1809
• SAMUEL: Baptised Marwood 3 Apr 1811; married SARAH UPTON, Ashford 25 Dec 1838. Samuel was a carpenter at Barnstaple; Sarah was a servant in Barnstaple, daughter of Philip Upton, labourer. Emigrated to the USA See Group C27
