According to War Roll of the Parish of Lynton, joined 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment 3 Oct 1907. Sergeant in Signal Service, Royal Engineers 1914-1919. Military Medal, 1914 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal. Stationed Exeter, Devonport, Malta, Crete, Alexandria, Cyprus, Cairo, Suez, France, Belgium, Western Front (4 yrs). In 1st Battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Fromelles, Loos, Somme, Messines, Ypres (1917), Passchendale, Somme Retreat, Villers, Brettneaux, Vimy Ridge, Aisne Retreat 1918, advance through France and Belgium. Demobilized 25 Apr 1919; discharged 2 Oct 1919. Listed on Roll of Honour at Parracombe see Group C6. Marriage to MINNIE MARIA MOGGRIDGE regd Barnstaple Mar 1918. In 1921 census at 1 Park Street, Lynton: Lewis 34yrs 1mth; scaffolder working for F.G. Coles, builder, at new buildings in West Porlock, Somerset; 3 under-16s at home, aged under 1, 3 and 7; Minnie 24yrs 10mths; born Lynton; home duties. Lewis died July 1954
