was a carpenter at Barnstaple; Sarah was a servant in Barnstaple, daughter
of Philip Upton, labourer. Emigrated to Picton, Ontario, Canada 1845. When his son was an infant, Samuel disappeared, presumed drowned maybe off a pier or dock. Sarah married Walter Kelly, lived in Guelph and London, Ontario.

WILLIAM JAMES UPTON: Born 1 Jan 1846 at Kingston, Ontario. Went to Military School in Kingston. Came to Prairie City, Jasper County, Iowa and worked for two years as a bricklayer and then in a drugstore.
Wanted to be a druggist.

Married (2) FLORENCE SLEMMONS, Prairie City, 16 Dec 1875. (Florence born 12 Jan 1852 at Cadiz, Ohio, daughter of Benjamin and Ruhama (nee Sherrod) Slemmons. In 1880 moved to Odebolt, Iowa, and William bought out the interest of W.W. Shanks in the drug firm of Shanks and Burleigh. In Spring 1883 bought out his partner and soon sold half interest to W.A. From 1883 William served as School Board Director until his death. 1884 Fire Chief Odebolt. 1886-1895 Treasurer of Odebolt. 1886 Organizer of the Odebolt State Bank. William died 5 Nov 1897 at Odebolt, Iowa. Click for a photo of his grave. Florence was killed in a street car accident in Los Angeles 21 Mar 1901 and buried in Odebolt.
