.Group C22 (Ilfracombe/Paignton) Summerwill

THOMAS: Baptised Marwood 25 Feb 1807, son of Thomas & Jane (nee White) (see Group C16). In 1841 census living at High St, Ilfracombe, maltman. In 1851 and 1861 censuses at Gas Works, Church St, Ilfracombe, master of the gas works. Married ELIZABETH HOLMES at Ilfracombe 1 Jun 1835. Elizabeth was baptised Ilfracombe 22 Oct 1809, daughter of William Holmes and Catharine Holmes (nee Richards) (married Ilfracombe 31 Jan 1799), daughter of William and Joan Richards, baptised Ilfracombe 1 Jan 1778.

SARAH ANNE: Baptised Ilfracombe 5 Feb 1836. At home in 1841 and 1851 censuses, scholar. In 1861 census house servant, age 25, at Adam & Eve Public House, 3 Maryleport St, Bristol (George Knowland, victualler)
THOMAS: Birth regd Barnstaple June 1838. Baptised Ilfracombe 10 Jun 1838. At home in 1841,1851 and 1861 censuses, shoemaker. Married ANNE GIBBS, daughter of John & Catherine Gibbs at Ilfracombe 19 Jan 1864, when Thomas was a lamplighter, age 25, and Anne a spinster aged 26. (John Gibbs was a sexton.) Marriage regd Barnstaple Mar 1864. After 1867 occupation given as gasman on children’s baptism records. Moved to Paignton about 1870, where Thomas died March 1873, age 34. Death registered Totnes. Anne was born Ilfracombe about 1839. She returned to Ilfracombe and appears in 1881 census at 85 High St, a widow aged 42, with four children. In 1891 census at 9 Portland Street, Ilfracombe, age 52, with three children at home. Anne died Ilfracombe 8 May 1921, age 82. Buried Ilfracombe with parents and son Thomas (MI).

ERNEST ALBERT: Born Ilfracombe; birth regd Barnstaple Dec 1864; baptised Ilfracombe 6 Jun 1865. In 1881 census with mother at Ilfracombe, age 16, post office clerk. In 1891 census at home, age 26, post office clerk. Marriage to EMILY PILE regd Barnstaple June 1891. Emily born Ilfracombe c.1865. Became supervising officer in post office by 1892. In Kelly's 1893 Directory listed as apartment proprietor at 16 Cambridge Grove, Ilfracombe; the post office is at 9 Portland Street. In 1901 census at 16 Cambridge Grove: Ernest age 36, chief Post Office clerk; Emily age 36. In Kelly's 1902 Directory listed as a private resident at same address.

IVY EMILY: Baptised Ilfracombe 27 Mar 1892 (recorded at St. Philip’s). At home in 1901 census, age 9. Marriage to Albert H. Heaven regd Barnstaple Mar 1923.
DOROTHY MAY: Born Ilfracombe; baptised Ilfracombe 4 Jun 1893. At home in 1901 census, age 7
ERNEST REGINALD: Born Ilfracombe; birth regd Barnstaple Sep 1895; at home in 1901 census, age 5. Marriage to DOROTHY G. ARMSTRONG regd Barnstaple Sep 1928

In Kelly's 1893 Directory listed as stationer and newsagent, Post Office, 9 Portland St, Ilfracombe. Died Ilfracombe 17 Oct 1896. Buried 24 Oct 1896 (MI).
WILLIAM: Born about 1872 Paignton. With mother in Ilfracombe in 1881 census age 9, scholar; with mother in 1891 census, age 19, post office clerk

Marriage to William John Eddy regd Newton Abbott Sep 1878. (William born Penzance c.1847). In 1881 census at 7 Ingatestone Terr, Tormoham; William coachman. In 1981 census at Tormoham, William coachman & groom, Elizabeth boarding house keeper; in 1901 census at Tormoham (Torquay), William age 54, boarding house keeper on own account; Elizabeth age 56
