At home (Instow) in 1881 census, age 2; in 1891 census (Rookbear, Fremington) age 12. Farm and mill worker at Mariansleigh after leaving school at the age of 12. Private in Royal Marines from 21 Nov 1896. In 1901 census (Mar 31) on HMS Melita in Constantinople, single, age 21, private. Married FLORENCE HAYES, Plymouth Registry Office 16 Apr 1902. Florence born Kingswear 1 Feb 1885, daughter of Charles Aze (born Plymouth 1847, son of William Aze and Mary Aze, nee Williams), labourer, and Jane Agnes Aze (formerly Warring, nee Willcocks, born Plymouth 1865, daughter of James Willcocks, master wire worker, born Devonport c.1841 (son of Joseph (mason) and Ellen Willcocks, Stoke Damarel), and Mary Jane Willcocks (formerly Summers, born Cardiff c.1846)). In 1901 census Florence (Eayes), age 21, is a servant (domestic) of Joseph Williams, plasterer, at 3 Fortescue St, Higher Compton, Plymouth. Jack sailed on HMS Renown, Isis, Melita and Resolution. Left Marines in 1902. Lived in Trentishoe (see Appendix 3 for probable location). and Rhondda. About 1907 moved to Swansea (first to Norfolk Street, then to Coed Saeson Crescent) and afterwards to Dunvant, Swansea, as building labourer and colliery repairer. Rejoined Marines 1914 and sailed on Vivid and Queen Mary. Injured in explosion when a Zeppelin dropped a bomb in the arms magazine and Queen Mary was sunk. 1916-1918 gunner, Royal Garrison Artillery, at coastguard station HMS Colleen in Cork, Ireland, then pensioned off. Returned to Dunvant (1 Rose Cottages, Voylart). 1936-1946 kept a tobacconist and confectionery shop in Peckham, London. Retired to 52 Tymawr Street, Swansea. William died 13 Oct 1955. Florence died 1 Jun 1961. Both buried Morriston Cemetery, Swansea.
FLORENCE EDITH: Born Trentishoe 14 Dec 1902. Baptised and registered under the surname of Slade as her father was hiding at the time, having deserted from the Royal Marines. Marriage to John Howell John, collier, Dunvant, Swansea, regd Swansea 1929. Lived Bryn Aeron, Dunvant & 52 Tymawr St, Port Tennant, Swansea. Son Ivor, was a Congegationalist minister in Brynmawr, Holywell and Dundee. Florence died 20 Sep 1987; buried Dunvant 26 Sep 1987 with John and son Lyn, who died age 7.
WILLIAM JOHN: Born Trentishoe 19 Feb 1905. Baptised and registered under the surname of Slade as his father was hiding at the time, having deserted from the Royal Marines. Brought up in Dunvant. Attended Three Crosses school. Worked at Killan Colliery until it was closed by flooding about 1925, then as jobbing gardener for Richard Hodgens, Gabalfa, Sketty. Married BEATRICE VIOLET MARTHA HOWELL (born 17 Mar 1904, daughter of Edward Morgan Howell, steelworker, and Ruth Howell, nee Thomas), Three Crosses, Gower, 1930. Lived 85 Hendrefoilan Rd, Sketty, Swansea. William served in Royal Marines (Plymouth Divn) in World War II (North Africa & Italy). In 1940s-1950s returned to gardening at Gabalfa for Hodgens, then Caleb Rees (wholesaler). In late 50s and 60s self-employed gardener/handyman, then building labourer for his son, Kingsley, until his retirement, and part-time for a few years afterwards. Enjoyed gardening as a hobby until he lost most of his mobility and sight. Violet was in domestic service with Hodgens family before her marriage, and did part-time cleaning until her retirement. Hobbies: knitting, crochet, sewing. Member of Capel-y-Crwys (Welsh Independent Chapel), Three Crosses, throughout her life. Violet died 16 May 1989, age 85; buried Crwys, 20 May 1989. William died 14 Jul 1992; buried with Violet 18 Jul 1992.
