Group C18 (Ilfracombe) Sommerwill

JOHN: Baptised Fremington 2 Mar 1794, son of Thomas and Jane (nee White); see Group C16. John Sommerwill 'sojourner of the Parish of Ilfordcombe', married MARY NUTT 'of this Parish, spinster' at Barnstaple 1st Sep 1817. Mary, daughter of William and Eliz Nott, baptised Bishop's Tawton 16 Oct 1793 (William Nott married Elizabeth Warren 26 Mar 1781 Bishop's Tawton). Together in 1841 census at High Street, Ilfracombe; John is a maltster (innkeeper). In 1851 census at 44 Brick Lane, Whitechapel, London, John age 53, beer shop keeper; Mary age 58. John is listed in the 1851 Post Office Directory, but not in 1861 or 1871, and 44 Brick Lane no longer existed in 1861. Mary buried Ilfracombe 11 Mar 1870, age 78.

WILLIAM: Baptised Ilfracombe 5 Nov 1818. At home in 1841 census; shoemaker. Married ELIZA (born Llandaff, Glamorgan, c.1820). Died 1845, aged 26. Buried Llandaff Cathedral (gravestone) .Eliza's remarriage regd Cardiff Jun 1850. In 1851 census Eliza is wife of ---? Richards, 3 Railway Terrace, Cardiff.

MARY: Baptised Llandaff 4 Dec 1842. In 1851 census with mother and stepfather at 3 Railway Terrace, Cardiff, aged 8.

JAMES: Baptised Ilfracombe 6 Jan 1820. Died Ilfracombe 19 Feb 1847, age 27, mariner (gravestone). Buried Ilfracombe 26 Feb 1847
SALLY NUTT: Baptised Ilfracombe 11 Mar 1821; Sarah Nutt (sic) married George Conibear, farmer (son of Richard Conibear, farmer) at Ilfracombe 24 Feb 1848; marriage regd Barnstaple Mar 1848
MARY ANNE: Baptised Ilfracombe 30 Dec 1822; Mary Anna (sic) married Philip Gammon, farmer (son of Amos Gammon, farmer) at Ilfracombe 5 May 1841; regd Barnstaple Jun 1841
GEORGE: Baptised Ilfracombe 14 Oct 1827; in 1841 census at home, age 12. Marriage to PRUDENCE JEWELL regd Barnstaple Jun 1868. Prudence born Ilfracombe c.1846, dau of Richard & Grace Jewell, both born Berrynarbor. In 1851 census Prudence is with parents, age 5, scholar, at Common Farm, Ilfracombe. Richard is a farmer of 60 acres. In 1871 census George & Prudence are at Hele, Ilfracombe, George age 35, cab driver, Prudence age 23. In 1881 census at Hele Village, George age 50(?), labourer, Prudence age 34; in 1891 census at Hele Village, George age 54, Cab Proprietor, Prudence age 43. George died 5 Apr 1900, age 71. In 1901 census Prudence living alone at 1 Millview, Hele, widow, 50, living on own means. Prudence died 9 Oct 1908, age 63 (gravestone).

ELLEN: Born Bittadon; birth regd Barnstaple Jun 1868. In 1871 census at Bittadon with family of Richard Jewill, visitor, age 3. In 1881 census with George & Prudence. Marriage to William Trathen regd Barnstaple Jun 1891. (Together in 1901 census at 74 Fore St, Ilfracombe: William age 38, dairyman farmer, born Buckland Brewer; Ellen 33; plus daughters Beatrice 9 and Kathleen 3)
CATHERINE JANE: Born Ilfracombe 26 Mar 1871; baptised St Philip’s, Ilfracombe, 11 Jun 1871. At home in 1891 census, age 20, dressmaker. Marriage regd Barnstaple Mar 1896

ELIZABETH: Baptised Ilfracombe 4 Apr 1830. At home, age 10, in 1841 census. In 1851 census in Putney, general servant, age 22
CATHERINE JANE: Baptised Ilfracombe 17 Jun 1832. At home, age 8, in 1841 census. Married William Janes (son of William Janes, bailiff), 29 Sep 1857, Christchurch, Marylebone, Middx. William, son of William & Sarah, baptised St Mary's, Taunton, 20 Mar 1830; coach builder; died age 42 Marylebone.
LOUISA: Baptised Ilfracombe 15 Mar 1835. At home, age 6, in 1841 census. With parents in Whitechapel, London in 1851 census, age 17. Louisa (dau of John Summerwill, butcher) married Joseph Clapham (son of Joseph Clapham, carpenter) at Stepney (Middx), St Dunstan’s, 12 Jan 1854 (IGI).

Now in my blooming years Death took me in my prime Dear friends do not lament Twas God’s appointed time	IN LOVING MEMORY OF GEORGE SUMMERWILL DIED APRIL 5th 1900 AGE 71 I THE LORD have called thee, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee. ALSO PRUDENCE SUMMERWILL WIFE OF THE ABOVE DIED OCTOBER 9 - 1908 AGED 63 Peace perfect peace.
