Appendix 3: Photos of Canadian Summerwills from Gwen Clark

Unfortunately, almost all of these photos are unlabelled and the identities of the people are unknown. Some may be friends rather than members of the family. If anyone has any suggestions about the identity of any of them, please let me know. John S. Summerwill

Mary Jane Summerwill. Now Mary Jane Ingram, 277 Can Hall Road, Leightonstone, London, England. Presumably sent out to her mother Lydia in Canada. - JSS

3 Lidia Anne? James Vickery appears in the 1881 census in Barnstaple as a photographer. Two of his sons, both born in the USA, were his photographic assistants. There is a strong likeness between this and Photo 1 of Mary Jane. The pinafore suggests she was still a girl. This photo could be of Mary's sister Lidia, taken about 1880 when she would have been 15. Lydia and her children emigrated between the 1871 and 1881 censuses. - JSS
4 Sarah Anne?

The writing on the top of the back of the picture. It appears to me to be Archis Rachie or Archies Lachie or perhaps Archies Ladie.

Please note that both 3a and 4a were taken at the same studio, same furniture.

This could be the second sister, Sarah Anne. - JSS

6 The back of the photo reads: Photographer T or J Hunter, New Market St., Barnstaple, The negative being preserved (or reserved) copies may be had at any time.
7 There is a strong resemblance to William Thomas Summerwill's son, William John (see photo). This is probably one of William Thomas's brothers, John or James. - JSS

9 I believe it is a photo of Lydia (Jr.) as it was taken at Bracebridge,
Ontario. Bracebridge is some distance south of Banburry where Lydia settled
but was at that time the nearest large town for shopping or business. The
apparent age of the girl in the picture and the location lead me in this
conclusion.

13 From the clothing this lady wore I don't believe they were paupers.
14 This is a very important photo as I would guess that this is Lydia Summerwill. The resemblance to the girl in an earlier photo is quite striking. Are they the same person or Mother and daughter? A. Nelson, Photographer, Durham, Ontario.

19 This reads F. McFadyen, photographer, Mount ForestThis is not only a mystery but an amusing mystery. He looks like he is pretending to be a pan handler (gold miner). Not only was he dressed funny (perhaps he was a miner, but I'm sure he did not have four feet. He must have been standing in front of a table.
20 This reads John A. Barnes, Mount Forest. The bottom line is too worn to decipher.
